After your initial psychiatric evaluation, you’ll have regular follow-up visits. These appointments build on what you and your provider started together. They’re how we keep your treatment working and make adjustments as you progress. Follow-up visits are typically shorter than your first appointment (around 20 minutes), but they’re just as important. They’re where real change happens.
We’ll check in on several key areas:
Typically, we schedule follow-ups within one month of your initial visit. After that, the frequency depends on your needs and how stable you are.
Some people need close monitoring, every two to three weeks early on. Others do well with longer intervals, every six to eight weeks once they’re stable. We adjust to what’s right for you.
In a crisis or if something significant changes, we might see you sooner. That’s what partnership means: you get what you need when you need it.
Your provider remembers your history, previous visits, diagnosis, treatment plan, and your goals. That continuity matters.
We’re not starting over each visit. We’re building on what’s already happened, adjusting as we go, celebrating progress, and addressing setbacks.
If something worked last month, we keep doing it. If something didn’t work, we try something different. This is collaborative problem-solving — you and your provider as a team.
Before your follow-up visit, it helps to think about:
You don’t need to write anything down, but having some thoughts ready helps you use your appointment time well.
Your follow-up visits work best when you’re actively engaged. That means:
Your provider is invested in your progress. But ultimately, you’re in charge of your care. We support you; you do the work.
For some people, psychiatric care is ongoing — not because something is wrong, but because regular check-ins help maintain progress and prevent relapse. For others, once you're feeling good and have the tools you need, visits become less frequent. We'll discuss what long-term care looks like for you. Is this something you'll be managing for months? Years? Together, we'll figure out the plan that makes sense.
